As it stands, the Edmonton Oilers have emerged as front runner for veteran defenceman Seth Jones.
These reports have surfaced from highly controversial ESPN columnist Greg Wyshynski, who has been known to blast the Oilers on several occasions.
Interestingly, Wyshynski suggests one possible destination could be Edmonton, where former Chicago GM Stan Bowman, who originally traded for and signed Jones, now works.
Jones was drafted 4th overall by the Nashville Predators back in 2013, and has gone on to play 797 career games since his debut in his age 18 season.
Stan Bowman was the architect for all three of Chicago's Stanley Cup winning teams. According to sources, Bowman still has strong ties to the Blackhawks organization, suggesting that a blockbuster deal could very well happen.
Jones, 29, is a top-four right-shot defenseman who logged heavy minutes (25:29 per game last season) for a struggling Blackhawks team.
He's still productive offensively but carries a hefty $9.5 million cap hit through 2029-30. Edmonton could temporarily fit Jones under the cap if Evander Kane's injury lands him on Long Term Injured Reserve (LTIR), but long-term cap concerns would make this a challenging move.
It has recently been revealed that the Edmonton Oilers are currently on the hunt for a top-four blue-liner, and Seth Jones fix that description perfectly. Although Chicago would need to retain some of his salary, a deal could strike - for the right price.
The Edmonton Oilers are loaded with exciting prospects such as Matthew Savoie and Sam O'Reilly. Both players are 1st round draft picks with significant offensive upside, and would be a great addition to Chicago's rebuilding efforts.
