Chicago Blackhawks head coach Luke Richardson made himself available for his usual morning interviews today, but provided a grim update on Andreas Athanasiou.
Athanasiou was put on waivers a little bit ago because he just couldn't get in the lineup and hasn't been the same player since returning from his last injury. After just three games into his time with the Rockford IceHogs, he suffered a wrist injury and will miss four to six weeks.
Watching Athanasiou play the past few seasons has been frustrating to watch to say the least. The Chicago Blackhawks forward is widely recognized for his blistering speed, but that often masks the fundamental issues of his game.
Despite scoring 20 goals with the Hawks two years ago and 30 goals with the Red Wings in 2018-19, his lack of consistency shows he currently does not belong in the NHL.
Athanasiou looked motivated during his first game with the IceHogs -- scoring a goal within the first 30 seconds against the Grand Rapids Griffins.
With that being said, it appears that Athanasiou will need to put a hold on his comeback. He'll be spending the next 4-6 weeks rehabilitating his wrist.
Could this be the end of Andrea Athansiou's career in the NHL? Time will tell.
